Content That Turns: Knobs, Rotation, and the Crystal Interface
Scroll is the wheel of the flat web. The futures thesis is that rotation is the gesture of the 3D web — and the knob-device room makes it literal. Turn a physical knob, and the content rotates: screens show full-page views of posts, products, forum threads, and media, each turning with a crystal-like animation as the knob moves. The content itself becomes tactile — not a feed you scroll, but a world you rotate. The knob is the metaphor for the graph: every turn traverses an edge, and the screens show what lives at the other end.
What we built
The concept is specified in the lucid-studio-design-rules study (PART 3): one large room, a cypherpunk device with physical knobs, three to six cyberpunk screens showing full-page content views as the knob turns, with crystal-like rotation animation. The build path is defined: Three.js + GLB, content from the WP REST API injected into textures or HTML overlays per knob position. Task t_bbea15db is the running prototype. The S9.8 visual language gives the interaction its look, and the S3.4 index-as-a-query concept gives the rotation its semantics: each knob position is a query, and the screens render the results.
The vision
The knob room is the graph as a physical instrument. Position one: the mesh series. Position two: physical ascension. Position three: the media pipeline. Each position is a saved query; the screens render the live answers — posts, products, threads, media — in full-page views. The crystal animation is not decoration; it signals the transition between worlds, the way page turns signal transitions between chapters. A visitor does not browse the Kingdom; they steer it. The interface is not a page; it is a device.
What’s next
The next increment is the prototype: model the knob device, bind one knob to one REST query per position, and render the first three positions with live content. The task is defined; this article is its design brief.
